Fatherhood Festivals across the country

Colin George and Dave Hughes were privileged to be invited down to Taree (October 23rd) by United Burnside to speak with service providers about how to set up a Fatherhood Festival in Taree for 2008. Peter Glencross the convenor gathered a team of health workers, play group leaders and other service providers to hear about the successes and challenges encountered by us at the Bangalow Festival.

The day was televised on NBN news that evening and Peter confirmed that it had really sparked the imagination of the community in Taree.

Part of our vision is to see Fatherhood Festivals happening across the nation on Father's Day and at other times in the year. So far festivals have grown in Perth, Forbes and other locations and we hope to be able to promote all of the festivals on our Fatherhood Festival website.

Dad's n Kids Play days in Murwillumbah

We have received seed funding from the YWCA's communities for children fund to set up our Dad's n Kids play days. The Play Days start on Saturday morning, November 17th, outside Knox Park Community Centre in Murwillumbah and are aimed at fathers who work throughout the week or who have weekend only custody of their children.

The day will be active, physical and fun with Scotty Longden working on ropes, hoops and things that Dads like to do with kids to unwind and relax. We intend to run the play days on market days so that the Mothers can enjoy some market shopping, knowing that the Dads and kids are having a great time.

Expectant Fathers Programmes taking offExpectant Fathers Programmes taking off

Dave Hughes, from Bangalow Community Centre explains that ‘more men want to be involved in their children's lives from the very start’. Dave and Scotty have been running expectant fathers courses for dads and the numbers are growing with each programme. The men are particularly interested in Nappy techniques and the range nappy ties available. Other interest is around sex, finances, breast feeding and much more. For course information call Scotty on 0438 666 204 or Dave on 02 6687 0008.
